Digital Photography

In addition to computer services, Columbia Computer Consulting provides expert teaching and tutorial on digital photography.

If you have a digital camera, or think you might want one, then we can really help you here!

Film-based cameras are rapidly becoming obsolete.  Digital cameras have taken hold BIG TIME, putting a high quality recording device into the hands of novices for the first time.

I've been a serious amateur/semi-pro photographer for over twenty years.  I first moved into digital photography in the year 2000.  Although I don't make my living in photography, I've shot weddings, school pictures, product promotions, food styling, still life, and many other subjects.

Nearly anyone can take snapshots with their camera, but few really have even the slightest idea of what to do next.  And who can blame them.  Photography in general is a complex and highly technical art form.  Throw in the digital aspect, and you've got quite a complicated and powerful medium at your disposal.

We will teach you how to make the most of your camera.  If you recently bought a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) then fabulous -- hang on and get ready to learn some really useful things.  Even if you have a point and shoot, there's plenty you can do as well!

There are literally hundreds of current model digital cameras on the market today, all offering a bewildering array of features.  Learn to look past the megapixel count and into the features that matter most.  Learn to choose your camera wisely, based on your need and budget.

Transferring images to your computer, organizing, and storing
OK, now you have a memory card full of digital images.  What to do now?

Editing your images
Post processing has taken on new meaning with digital photography.  In the chemical darkroom, post processing was limited to relatively simple (but difficult to execute) manipulations.  e.g.  Push/pull film development, burn/dodge printing, cropping, color correction, simple manual print retouching.

But in the digital darkroom (your computer with the appropriate photo editing software), your possibilities are nearly endless.  You have an unbelievable level of control over your images!
